Byrd has been staying in the apartment with a Harriet Gifford Elementary School student.

Earlier today a child reported to staff that they saw a gun in that student’s backpack, said School District U-46 spokesman Patrick Mogge.

School staff took the backpack to the main office and called police.

The backpack belonged to a 7-year-old boy, and he was also taken to the office to speak with police and school staff.

Police searched the building to make sure no other items were brought to the school. No other weapons were found.
Byrd will appear in bond court tomorrow morning.
