Busts in Harvey yield illegal cigarettes and more
Illinois State Attorney General Lisa Madigan announced charges against four Chicago gas stations for under-reporting sales which defrauded the state more than one-million dollars in revenue.
And today, suburban Harvey police were busting gas stations and tobacco shops for evading sales taxes for selling cigarettes illegally.
WGN’s camera went along for the ride when authorities busted four businesses for selling cigarettes illegally.
Harvey police say they also confiscated counterfeit money, a gun and prescription drugs.
Some of the gas stations busted were selling single, loose cigarettes for $1 dollar a piece, depriving the city of Harvey sales tax revenue.
Some of the cigarettes came from neighboring Indiana where tobacco products are cheaper.
The four businesses raided today will remain closed until January when the owners will appear in court.
The secret service was contacted to investigate the counterfeit money found in one of the raids.
