The Season of Giving is off to a mysterious and generation start in Lake Zurich.

The Salvation Army reports that four coins were dropped anonymously in their Red Kettles earlier this week, each valued at $1300.

The 1-ounce, “fine gold $50 coins” were dropped in the kettles Wednesday at the Walmart at 820 S Rand Rd in Lake Zurich.

The tradition of dropping gold coins into the red kettles goes back about 25 years, according to the Salvation Army, when the first was dropped in McHenry County.

“Since then, The Salvation Army has received more than 400 gold coins of every type and description from anonymous donors,” the organization said.

Virtual Red Kettles are available on-line at www.salarmychicago.org.
