A man was killed and his pregnant girlfriend wounded during an early morning shooting in East Chicago Indiana, according to police.
Rolando Cuevas, 23, was fatally shot around 6:30 a.m. Saturday morning. East Chicago police said members of Cuevas’ former gang are suspected of opening his bedroom window and firing a flurry of shots at him and his 20-year-old girlfriend who is 8-months pregnant.
Cuevas’ girlfriend was shot in the back and rushed to St. Catherine Hospital where family members said she and the baby are stable.
The baby girl Cuevas and his girlfriend were expecting inspired him to leave his gang.
“He has his baby coming. He was just tired of that life. He wanted to change his life,” according to Jesus Ramirez
Jesus Ramirez heard more than nine shots ring out from the room where his daughter and granddaughter were sleeping as well. Cuevas, known as “RC”, was staying at Ramirez’s house on the 3500 block of Grand in East Chicago for the holidays.
“He was a good guy. He stayed out of trouble,” Ramirez said.
Ramirez said Cuevas was working two jobs, saving money, and hoping to get a home for his new family.
“He was just tired of that life. He got a job and he was trying to get his life together,” Ramirez said.
The two spent Friday night talking about Cuevas’ plans. They never imagined what would happen hours later.
“It’s heartbreaking. Something tragic like that, you don’t think it’s going to happen,” said Ramirez.
Police are asking anyone with information about the shooting to contact the East Chicago Police Department at (219) 398-COPS or the anonymous tip line at (219) 391-8500.
