Calumet City man charged with labor trafficking

A man from Calumet City is jailed in Cook County’s first case of labor trafficking.

Prosecutors say 26-year-old Roy Estivez exploited two mentally handicapped men, ages 22 and 23, by conning them into handing over their paychecks to him.

The alleged abuse started in August. State’s attorney Anita Alvarez says Estivez often denied the victims food for days at a time; the men were also beaten, whipped with electrical cords and burned with a hot knife.

The indictment alleges that Estivez threatened to kill the men and hurt their families if they tried to leave him.

The abuse came to light in October when one victim’s employer noticed visible wounds on his body, and reported them.

Estivez is being held on a half million dollars bond.
