More suits filed over LaSalle County lockup abuse allegations
A lawyer calls it Illinois’ answer to Abu Ghraib. The LaSalle County Lockup, according to him, is a jail so horrible more former inmates are coming forward and suing.
Four more inmates came forward Thursday following allegations from a Coal City woman who says she was strip-searched and abused there.
Dana Holmes was arrested for DUI last May. She says she was picked up, thrown into a cell and forcibly stripped by four deputies, three of them male, then left naked, fearing she might be raped.
Her lawyer says that case opened the floodgates and his phone hasn’t stopped ringing.
Today four more people named Lasalle County Sheriff Thomas Templeton and, at this point, unknown sheriff’s officers, who despite being recorded by surveillance cameras, allegedly subjected detainees to regular abuse and humiliation.
The suit filed Thursday says humiliating inmates has become standard practice at the lockup.
Lasalle County officials have said their deputies have done nothing wrong.
