Driver dies after vehicle plunges into Lake Michigan

A 64-year-old man has died after the vehicle he was driving went into Lake Michigan at Balbo Drive late Thursday night.

The car, entered the water about 10:30 p.m., police said.

Divers from the Chicago Fire Department quickly spotted the vehicle and broke its windows to reach the driver.

The man was pulled out of the water and taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in critical condition but later died.

It was not immediately clear what caused the driver to continue east of the intersection, but police were investigating whether he had experienced a medical emergency, a police source told the Chicago Tribune.

An autopsy is scheduled for today.
