Headstone donated to grave of abused boy who died in ’09

A 13 year-old boy who was starved, beaten, abused, and locked in a cage for two years until he died will truly rest in peace now.

Christian Choate died in April 2009. He weighed less than 50 pounds at the time.

CaptureHis father and stepmother buried him in a shallow grave near their home in Gary, Indiana. His body was found in May 2011.

His father was sentenced to 80 years in prison, and his stepmother was given 35 years behind bars.

He was finally laid to rest in September 2012, but without a headstone. Ridgelawn Cemetery donated the casket, vault, and grave site.

Since then, people across the country, especially Pat Breslan of Washington State, donated money to buy a headstone. She read about the story online, and felt compelled to help.

“I had to do something for him, and let people know that these children count, children like Christian, and not just turn a blind eye anymore,” said Pat Breslan.

A dedication ceremony for the headstone took place Friday morning at the Ridgelawn Cemetery. Breslan attended the event.

“Now he knows that he’s well loved, and could be happy now,” said Christian’s grandfather, Bernard Erik.

Sad to say, it had to fall to someone half a continent away to give this closure. Thank you, Ms Breslan. You are truly someone with a heart and soul.
