Wet, but warmer, Halloween expected

Monday’s sunny weather and moderate temperatures, pretty decent by late-October standards, won’t last much longer.

High-level ice-crystal cirrus clouds, the harbingers of rainy weather ahead, begin appearing in the sky this afternoon, gradually thickening into an overcast Monday night and Tuesday. Computer models are quite generous in their predictions of anticipated rainfall across the nation’s midsection and, specifically, here in Chicago in coming days.

Through October 27, the month’s rain totaled 1.53 inches as measured officially at O’Hare International Airport, but there is reasonable expectation that rainfall in the next three days will bring at least that much additional water. A vigorous low pressure system, heading northeast through the Great Plains midweek, is to tap moisture from the Gulf of Mexico, leading to widespread, potentially abundant rainfall.
