Heat disconnected at women’s shelter in West Englewood
A women’s shelter in the West Englewood neighborhood is without heat this week, after People’s Gas shut off service because of an overdue bill.
Clara’s Place owner, Clara Kirk, says the shelter owes the gas company $21,026.74. Service was disconnected October 16th.
One resident is using her stove to heat her rooms and warm water for bathing.
With the temperatures continuing to drop, Clara is very concerned. “I’m devastated. I’m in a position where this never happened before.”
People’s Gas issued a statement saying it has been working with the owner of Clara’s Place since April and will keep working to find an amicable payment plan.
The shelter houses 19 women and 23 children.
Clara’s Place is one of two shelters operated by the West Englewood United Organization. The second shelter, Clara’s House, also is facing disconnection. They owe Peoples Gas about $11,000.
