Alderwoman: Bike owners should pay annual fee of $25

A Chicago alderwoman wants the city to force bicycle owners to register their bikes, just like cars, and pay an annual fee.

Third Ward Alderwoman Pat Dowell says $25 a year would be fair, and as a revenue generator, it would be better than raising city taxes on cable TV.

Dowell also wants to require all bike owners to take a safety class.

But Mayor Emanuel says, charging fees wouldn’t be compatible with his push to make Chicago a bike-friendly city.

So bike registration is effectively dead.

There's always some alderman trying to stir up controversy by some crazy way to make the city more money. A safety class? If you do that, then you have to make EVERY DRIVER of a motor vehicle take a class on how to look out for and drive safe around cyclists. Not to mention have a mandatory safety class wing at the Chicago Triathlon Expo where every one of the 10k participants would be robbed even more than they already are on a daily basis by this city.

    Love the idea!!!
Help pay for some of the hundreds of miles of bike lanes that the rest if us are paying for!!
Register bikes? License plates? Absolutely! Helps to find the owner, when they are stolen!!
Someone mentioned insurance?? Great idea! Would've helped the car owner I saw who got slammed by a bicyclist who blew the red light and smashed into his car! Thus…causing the car owner to pay higher insurance due to an accident with a uninsured motorist!
Bicyclists think they own the road now because of the bike lanes, but do not stop at signals or use hand signals!
They need to be forced to abide by the rules of the road!
Trust me…there are thousands of us in Chicago who feel this way…not the few dozen of you, on here, opposing the idea!

Idiot Pat DumbassDowell need to go. Cable IS a luxury. Quadruple THAT tax. Bicyclists should RECEIVE $25 for USING their bikes instead of driving.
