Two men were shot, one fatally, Monday morning in the East Chatham neighborhood.
The shooting happened just before 9:00 a.m. at 82nd and Maryland. The gunman opened fire on two men in a car.
The passenger was shot in the back, got out of the car and died at the scene.
The driver was shot in the back of the head but was able to step on the gas and made it a block east to 82nd and Drexel before he smashed into a number of parked cars and pushed them into the intersection.
The driver was taken to Stroger Hospital in critical condition.
No one else was injured in the crash.
Neighbors say shootings in this area of east Chatham, unfortunately, happen frequently, enough that one of them didn’t think anything of the shots until she heard her parked car was one of those hit.
Another woman whose car was totaled in the crash says since she moved here in 2005, she’s noticed a lot more violence.
Adrian Dobbins said “To be honest, in my place. I love my place. I love it still but it’s outside your place you just don’t know. Going to your car, coming from your car, you just don’t know. It’s pretty disheartening.”
No motive is being given in this shooting. Police are looking for a specific gunman at this hour.
One man, shot in the back, is confirmed dead. The second victim, who was shot in the head, is in critical condition at Stroger Hospital.
Chicago Police say they have a name of a suspect but have not yet located him.
