A local school council voted in favor of restoring the name of an Olympic legend to a South side elementary school.
The “Jesse Owens Community Academy” was one of many Chicago public schools to be consolidated over the summer.
The school merged with Samuel Gompers Elementary and dropped the “Owens” name.
Owens was a gold-medal Olympic runner and an important figure in African-American history.
His daughters live in Chicago and say they were hurt when CPS removed their father’s name from the building.
After the local school council’s vote, the Board of Education will take up the matter at its meeting on October 23.
If the Board approves the name change, it will go into effect immediately.
