Chicago’s last Bennigan’s to close

The very last Bennigan’s restaurant in the city of Chicago will close by the end of the year, falling victim to rising rent at its Michigan Avenue location.

Building owners shopped the space at 150 S. Michigan, a prime location near the Art Institute and Millennium Park, and told the Bennigan’s Chief Financial Officer they found a tenant to pay twice what the company is paying – a price the restaurant can not sustain.

Bennigan’s CFO Scott Arnold told the Chicago Tribune all 88 employees will lose their jobs if they are not hired by nearby Bennigan’s – the closest being in suburban Elgin.

After more than 20 years, the restaurant’s last day will be December 16, 2013.

I am sorry that those people are going to lose their jobs. But, their food was always overpriced and God awful (the only thing they had going for them was they served alcohol). Give me Denny's anytime!

Bennigan's was decent a few years ago. It progressively became awful since it closed the first time.

I's no wonder… terrible management pretty much wrecked the location, including water damage to the basement. Constantly breaking lease rules about windows signs, serving after 2am and worse.. the fights that broke out in front.

The place was also wracked with theft. Managers stealing alcohol and food. Servers stealing from the company, bus staff stealing from the servers, everyone stealing from the break room.

Those of us who worked there knew that place was dead long ago.
