Illinois WWII vets visit DC memorial despite gov’t shutdown

The government shutdown threatened to keep dozens of Illinois veterans from getting to Washington, DC to visit the World War Two Memorial.

But it was mission accomplished.

Ninety-one World War Two veterans from the Chicago area made it to the memorial built in their honor.

They left Midway Airport Wednesday morning as if they were on a military mission.

The World War Two Memorial is supposed to be closed due to the government shutdown, but organizers said the barricades were already moved when Illinois veterans arrived at midday.

That’s because Tuesday’s honor flight veterans from Mississippi and Iowa required another group of politicians to physically move barricades for them.

Many of the veterans are now in their 80s and 90s, and there were concerns they may never get another chance to visit the memorial.

Wednesday’s honor flight participants are due back at Midway at around eight p.m. for a “welcome home” reception.

These Vets should be running this country! Not the clowns we have now! They should be escorted in with honors to see the memorial. It should not not be blocked off to any vets. They saved this country! A salute to you
    Veterans! A very proud American!

Actually a Republican Congressman Gohmert from Texas will greet the veterans at the Memorial. The Congressman has the right and duty to inspect all memorials for accuracy, safety, appropriateness and appearance.

Today the Congressman will require a hundred or so elderly "assistants ". Men and women who will demonstrate that all aspects of the WWII Memorial are handicap accessible. The inspection will require and hour or two of their time and there may be a few welcome speeches. Thank you .
