Cubs fire manager Dale Sveum

The Chicago Cubs have fired manager Dale Sveum.

Sveum has managed the Cubs for the past two season and had a year left on his contract.

About two weeks ago, team president Theo Epstein declined to give Sveum a vote of confidence, but at the same time, Epstein said there were “no alarm bells to ring” about the manager.

The Cubs finished the season with 66 wins and 96 losses, losing 14 of their final 18 games.

And the Tribune’s Mark Gonzalez reports Sveum’s firing could pave the way for the Cubs to pursue Yankees manager — and former Cubs catcher — Joe Girardi.
