Jury award $1 million to man wrongly jailed
A man who was wrongly held in jail for more than a year was awarded $1 million from a jury in Cook County.
John Collins is now 42-years-old. He was arrested in 2006 for aggravated battery to a police officer.
During his time in jail, he missed the birth of his first child.
Collins was awarded $100 thousand dollars for emotional distress and $900 thousand dollars for loss of a normal life.
The city of Chicago and Chicago Police officer Officer Michael Garza were found guilty of malicious prosecution. A spokesman for the City’s law department said the city may appeal.
