Finale

photo

It is our final home game of the season.  Kinda hard to believe.  Usually, bad years for a baseball team are called “long” seasons, but I felt like this one went pretty fast.  Maybe it’s just that I’m getting older and EVERYTHING is going by too quickly.

Special thanks to our home TV crew on both WGN and CSN.  We are fortunate to have such a hard-working group at Wrigley that collectively wants to put on the best baseball broadcast in the league every single day.

Having Wrigley Field as our backdrop certainly doesn’t hurt 81 days a year.

Also, what a first year for my new partner.  JD stepped right into some pretty big shoes and instantly became a part of the family.  I love that he and his family have made Chicago their year-round home and I sensed throughout the year that Cubs fans quickly grew accustomed to his style and sense of humor.  We are lucky to have him.

It is Wednesday September 25, 2013 and it feels like Spring! There is excitement in the air! I feel like a kid again! It just so happens to be my day off and I'm home! Perfect! Why is this such a great and wonderful “stars lining up” sort of moment?? It is the last home game of the Cubs Season ~ and I can watch it on WGN (America)!

The Cubs are 28 games out of First Place (although, were eliminated just a few weeks ago); The Cubs have never lost as many Home games in this 99 Year old park as they have this year, 50. And yet I do not want to miss this game! I would have recorded it if I was at work eliminating the tough prediction of whether or not to record America's Funniest Home Videos in case the game goes extras or goes long and you don't want to miss the riveting last 3 outs. Wait – gotta go for a second – Wayne Messmer is singing the National Anthem and I need to participate as if I am standing right there among the Faithful – quickly I enter my Den (Cub's Den) and see many unhappy faces on the TV screen and not too many singing, I see a young child whose right-side of his forehead is buried in his Mom's side with a look on his face that seemed to express his mother told him he could not have any more candy for the rest of his life – oh – but wait – she does have the decency to grab the boy's right hand hanging by his side and emphatically place it over his heart. Back to the National Anthem – I see the Cubs coaches and players in front of their dugout, mostly clean cut, contemplating what life will be like back at home, with their families, attempting to re – enter reality, Barney wondering if he will be a Cub for Wrigley Field's 100th Birthday.

Len (Kasper) states that the Cubs are avoiding the sweep but this game is way more than that Len. This came is the last day of 2013 to see my Team play baseball in the greatest baseball field ever built. This is a sad day for me – hence my attempts to make believe it is Spring, avoiding the inevitable, another long Winter of missing my 'boys'. This team is a loveable Team – one that will never beat you down or purposely hurt you but one that will disappoint you time and time again. No matter who is in the pinstripe, they play hard, they want to win,, they love their Fans, the looks on their faces as they face another tough loss makes you want to hang out with them after the game and talk about the next game. But there is hope! This Year is different! We are Young! We have had a 'promising' second half of the Season. The kids got a taste of the Big Leagues ready to make their mark as future stars! And , as a bonus, we got to feel the excitement of the Post Season by playing the Braves, Pirates, Cardinals and Brewers (oh – forget the Brewers).

2014 will be different! Theo is working his plan – you can feel it – behind the every day goings -on of the days and nights- Theo's wheels are turning, deals are done, handshakes are happening. How do I know?? I don't. But I am a hopeful Cub Fan.

Dale Svuem – I like him. He's like a good 'ol Uncle Cubby. But we need someone a bit meaner, someone with a scowl a little scarier than the one over the cubby bear's right eye. One of Italian descent, One of the son of a United States Air Force Veteran. One of a man who looks like Baseball. Who is tough yet firm, one who disciplines yet loves, one who will care for his kids, building Character, Strength, and Champions that will last a lifetime.

It's great to Hope and Dream and Live. It's great to be a Cubs Fan!
