Man sentenced to 30 years in beating death of father or 12
A 19-year-old man was sentenced today to 30 years in prison for the beating death of a father or 12 last summer.
19-year-old Anthony Malcolm stood in court and apologized to his family and the family of 62-year-old Delfino Mora before Judge Joseph Claps sentenced him to 30 years in prison.
Seven defense witnesses took the stand to say what a good person Malcolm was; respectful, hard working, a member of the Senn High School ROTC.
His aunt, a retired CPS teacher, cried and said she never would have predicted Malcolm would hurt anybody.
But on July 10th of last year Mora, a Mexican immigrant who spoke little English, was collecting cans to supplement his disability payment. He was approached in the alley in West Rogers Park by Malcolm and two friends, 18-year-olds Nicholas Ayala and Malik Jones, as part of a game they called “Pick em out. Knock ’em out.”
They allegedly attacked him and robbed him. Malcolm videotaped the attack while Jones allegedly hit Mora who fell to the ground.
Mora, husband and father of 12, grandfather of 23, laid unconscious in that alley for three hours before someone saw him. He died the next day.
The three teens posted the video on Facebook and were caught.
Judge claps said sometimes good people do bad things. And that it was a sad day for both families but especially the Mora’s who lost the most.
