Two wrongfully imprisoned men released

Two men wrongfully imprisoned for crimes they didn’t commit were released Tuesday afternoon.

58-year-old Carl Chatma, the mentally disabled and homeless man was convicted of a sexual assault in 2004, was sentenced to 30 years behind bars. A clerk at the Daley Center said he raped her in May 2002.

She won a big settlement from the county in this case. An investigation later found she received another settlement from an alleged rape case in 1979. The State’s Attorney’s office concluded she fabricated both crimes to make money.

Latherial Boyd was also wrongfully sentenced to 82 years in prison for a fatal shooting in Wrigleyville. Boyd was found guilty of killing one person and wounding another outside a bar in 1990.

His lawyers successfully argued his conviction rested primarily on the testimony of the wounded man, Ricky Warner. They contended Warner initially told police he did not know who shot him, but during the trial Warner testified Boyd shot him and the other man over a drug debt.
