New doors at the Illinois Capitol cost $670,000

Governor Pat Quinn is facing a wave of criticism over some new doors at the State Capitol.

Six wooden doors covered in copper were recently installed as part of a $50 million renovation of the Capitol building in Springfield.

The doors cost  nearly $670,000.

They were custom-made to resemble the Capitol’s original oak and black walnut doors that were decorated in bronze back in the 1860′s.

Critics are blasting the decision to install such ornate and expensive doors while the state faces a backlog of $5 billion in unpaid bills and $100 billion in unpaid pension obligations.

Quinns standard response is this created a thousand construction jobs and will result in a hundred permanent jobs.

But what’s the problem? It’s not the doors, or the $670k
      It’s the pensions we can’t afford….
