South Side man steals rental car after being ‘overcharged’

Police have charged a 40-year-old South Side man with felony auto theft after he told officers he was “keeping the car” because the rental company overcharged him.

Steve Scott, of the 6200 block of South Talman Avenue, was pulled over for not wearing a seat belt on Tuesday when police discovered the Chevrolet he was driving had been reported stolen, according to prosecutors.

Scott allegedly told officers he was charged about $800 a month beginning in July and when the month was up he was told he had to return it or it would be reported stolen.  He then allegedly told officers that he was “keeping the car” because the rental company had overcharged him, saying, “It’s like, three weeks overdue.”

Scott was being held on $50,000 bond.

You could have gotten a better car rental deal, if you had shopped around.
