Off duty officer attacked while running on North Side
Police have issued a community alert, after an off-duty Chicago police officer almost sexually assaulted in broad daylight Thursday on the city’s Northwest Side.
Police said the female officer was out for a jog between 2 and 3 in the afternoon on the path at Bryn Mawr and Lowell., when a man on a bicycle approached her and tried to assault her.
She fought back and he fled the scene near Peterson and Pulaski.
The officer was treated at a nearby hospital for minor injuries.
The area is a busy one, populated by many homes, businesses and popular running paths.
Other joggers are already taking steps to ensure their own safety. Diane King says she’ll be running with pepper spray from now on.
“And I’ll be sure to be aware of my surroundings,” she told WGN. “And make sure I always have a little bit left, just in case I have to sprint away from someone.”
The offender was described as a male, white Hispanic, 22-26 years old, approximately 5’7″, 140-150 pounds, with short black hair.
He has been described as wearing a gray short sleeve T-shirt and blue jeans.
