A Chicago man is in custody for the murder of a Navy veteran who was shot and killed Sunday.
18-year-old Devon Brunt is charged with the murder of 33-year-old Telkia Burns. Burns was shot and killed during a robbery Sunday afternoon at his apartment building on East 91st.
According to Chicago police, the gunman shot burns in the temple before taking Burns’ money and house keys.
The victim’s mother, Katherine Burns says she can forgive the gunman who killed her son but it won’t take away the pain.
Burns served as a ships engineer for the Navy from 1999 until 2004. He was a trained welder but went back to school at Chicago State for community health. He was going to begin his senior year this week.
His biggest love, beyond his 7 and 8 year old sons, was cooking.
“My son gave me 33 years of happiness,” Katherine said. “I’m proud of him. Everything he touched, he achieved. I’ll miss him dearly. But I know in my heart that my son is with his maker.”
Katherine said her son was proud of his service to his country. She was just notified today that the veterans administration has promised full scholarships for his sons when its time for them to go to college in about 10 years.
Police do have an 18-year-old is custody for this murder. Charges are pending.
