A mantel can transform your fireplace and even an entire room. Alex Enarson of the Rebuilding Exchange shows us how to craft a mantel piece from reclaimed wood. Here’s how to create your own eco-friendly piece:

  • Steel brush
  • Bristled brush
  • Soft brush
  • Hammer
  • Cat’s paw
  • Tape measure
  • Saws-all
  • Belt sander
  • Orbital sander
  • Safety gear
  • Tack cloth
  • Shop rags
  • Linseed oil
  • Turpentine

  1. Clean wood surface and remove nails
  2. Measure and cut wood to length
  3. Sand surface
  4. Clear area of dust
  5. Mix linseed and turpentine 1/1
  6. Apply two coats of finish and wipe excess

This easy project will take around four hours but only costs $40!
