Police: Man attacks girlfriend after mistakenly released from jail

A man is accused of attacking his girlfriend after he was mistakenly released from jail.

Steven Derkits faced several charges when he was arrested July 9 for beating up his girlfriend.

Most of the charges were eventually dropped, except for one.

But he was released from the Cook County Jail, after an employee believed that all of the charges were dropped.

The Sheriff’s Department blamed the premature release on human error.

Officials realized the mistake after Derkits missed court on Tuesday.

Police arrested him a few hours later.

Police say he attacked his girlfriend again on Monday, but no charges have been filed.
