The Chicago-based Evangelical Lutheran Church in America has elected its first female leader.

Bishop Elizabeth Eaton, 58, defeated Presiding Bishop Mark Hansen, who has held the post since 2001.

Bishop Eaton is a married mother of two daughters.   She was ordained in 1981 and served in three Ohio parishes before becoming the Northeast Ohio Bishop in 2007.

The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America is the nation’s largest Lutheran denomination, formed when three other Lutheran groups merged 25 years ago.
