One man was killed and another one injured in a shooting along a CPS “Safe Passage” on the South Side over the weekend.
54-year-old Ralph McNeal and a 26-year-old man were shot in the 2900 block of South State St around 6:15 p.m Saturday evening. They were taken to the hospital and McNeal was pronounced dead.
Parents of children who will attend Chicago’s Drake Elementary School are on edge because of its location on a designated CPS “safe passage” route. The routes were set up to make the transition to new schools go more smoothly for the students affected by school closures. The program will put vetted community members along these designated routes to help make the walk to and from school more safe.
Chicago Police Dept released a statement saying, “Ensuring the safety of our children is everyone’s top priority. Kids have been walking through challenging areas for years and through the Safe Passage program, in partnership with the community, we will continue to help kids focus on their studies instead of their safety.”
A spokesperson for CPS referred WGN to the CPD statement saying, “The Chicago Police Department is responding to this incident which is our usual protocol as this did not involve schoolchildren nor occur on school grounds or during the school day or during school hours.”
The first day of class for most CPS students is August 26th.
