Guardian Angels patrol Mag Mile after string of muggings
A well-known, anti-violence group is patrolling “the Magnificent Mile” on Tuesday to warn people about the threats of muggings.
The “Guardian Angels” say the “Mag Mile” should instead be called the “Muggers Mile,” and criminals still view the popular stretch as a personal ATM. They’re concerned about the number of muggings over the past year.
“What we don’t want is for it to become the ‘Muggers Mile.’ Again, there’s been a rash of attacks in the area. Police have actually stepped up their presence. Things have calmed down quite a bit. But when the weather gets good, you’ve got the flash mobs here, the bash mobs or we should call them,” said Thomas Hunt of the “Guardian Angels.”
The city has increased police patrols in the area, and say arrests have been made in several crimes.
The city also insists the “Mag Mile” and downtown are safe. It says in the past 28 days, there have only been three incidences.
