A new, independent budget office is expected to be created to monitor and analyze spending at City Hall.

The office would help aldermen examine Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s spending proposals and privatization plans.

It would also suggest alternatives to balancing budgets.

Ald. Ameya Pawar, 47th Ward,  is calling for the office. The mayor and more than 20 aldermen are behind him.

Pawar says the office could help prevent another financial disaster, like the parking meter lease deal.
