Durbin, Dart introduce new gun tracing legislation

Illinois senator Dick Durbin is in Chicago today to announce new gun control legislation.

He says the “Crime Gun Tracing Act” will make it easier for law enforcement to solve cases when guns are involved.

Durbin and Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart say law enforcement agencies should do more to take advantage of free online software that can be used to trace guns used in the commission of a crime, which is only done by about 40% of all the departments across the state.

If more of the cities took advantage of eTrace Durbin says police would have another tool to use in fighting crimes, especially how they could use that to find out how guns are getting into the hands of criminals.

“Coming up with that crime, and tracing its origin,” said Durbin, “is a good way to determine patterns for crime and find ways to prevent these firearms from falling into the wrong hands.”

“If someone wants to make this bizarre, twisted argument that somehow this undercuts the Second Amendment you just need to give up with those people, because there’s no argument there,” said Dart.  “This literally, as Senator Durbin pointed out,  only goes after guns found at crime scenes.  These aren’t guns found in people’s backyards, in their house or anything like that — at the crime scene.  If you’re opposed to this, you’re for criminals, it really is that simple.”

Both Durbin and Dart say that since the bill only applies to guns used in the commission of a crime, they feel they can gain the necessary votes in congress to it to pass.
