Relatives of boy who fell in dune speak out
Family members and worshippers at a church in west central Illinois gave thanks today for the continuing recovery of a child who was buried in sand for several hours at the Indiana Dunes.
Six-year-old Nathan Woessner (WAYZ’ -ner) is now in good condition at Comer Children’s Hospital.
His grandfather, Don Reul, is pastor of the First Baptist Church in Galva, Illinois.. where he spoke to the congregation today about Nathan’s ordeal and rescue.
Nathan’s older brother Jake Reul says it was a frightening experience for everyone in the family, “I thought I wasn’t going to have a brother anymore. I mean, he was down there for so long that I just didn’t think he was going to be alive.”
“We were in deep grief. He had just been to our house and spent a bit of time. You’re recalling every one of the things you did with him when he was there, and you’re in deep mourning wishing you could have some of it back again,” added Nathan’s grandfather Don Reul.
Rescuers used heavy equipment to dig Nathan out of the sand, where he was trapped 11 feet down.
His grandfather and the congregation at his church describe Nathan’s recovery as “a miracle”.
