Chicago City Council toughens assault weapons ban

On Wednesday, Mayor Rahm Emanuel got what he wanted when the Chicago City Council voted unanimously to toughen its existing ban on assault weapons.

After passage of the Illinois’ new concealed carry law, Emanuel had wanted to add more weapons to the banned list.

gunsAnd with parents complaining about long commutes through violent neighborhoods because of school closures, the mayor wanted to stiffen the fines and penalties for gun crimes committed near schools and so-called “safe passage” routes to schools.

City officials admit the measures will have a limited impact on the gun violence plaguing some city neighborhoods.
