Hospital’s former neighborhood close to flatlining
One year after Children’s Memorial Hospital shut down in Lincoln Park and there are no signs of new life for the old site.
Children’s Memorial Hospital attracted an estimated 1.5 million visitors each year. Now, nearby business owners say they’ve been forced to adjust to a drop in business.
Abunaser Wazdillah owns the Lincoln C Mart and says his business is down 30 to 40 percent since the hospital closed its doors. A few shops have had no choice but to shut down in the last few months because of a drop in business.
There are plans to develop the site but they have not been approved by residents.
Ald. Michele Smith says the main concern is congestion and an overcrowded school. Lincoln Elementary School would house any new students coming into the ward. The school is already overcrowded and a new facility would be needed to accommodate any new development. Will that be part of a new plan? It’s still not clear.
It’s expected that McCaffrey Interests, the company chosen to develop the site is expected to introduce a new plan within the next few weeks. Once that’s approved by residents and the city, construction can begin.
