An elderly man was killed this morning when a car struck him on the south side.
Family members say 77-year-old Arthur Johnson began his day as he’s started every day since 1979, walking a couple of blocks to grab his morning paper. But this morning he was hit by a car crossing Racine at 83rd St. The car kept going.
Eyewitnesses got a good look and were shocked by what they saw.
“I heard the noise from the impact of his body hitting the ground,” said Katherine Watson. “And then he rolled. And it was just so devastating I just can’t get it out of my mind.”
Today was Arthur’s birthday.
LaQuette Skinner, Arthur’s niece says the family is devastated. “He’s gone. And instead of birthday cake and celebration, we’re in there with funeral directors,” she said. “It’s terrible. It’s killing us. M y uncle was murdered this morning just walking to get his paper.”
Investigators say the car they’re looking for is a dark-colored, two-door, 2002-2005 Mercedes C230 with passenger-side windshield and driver-side hood damage.
