Teens’ county fair bomb plot thwarted

Officials stopped an Indiana teen from setting off a homemade explosive device at the Laporte County Fair last week.

The plan was thwarted with the help of two tipsters. One who called 911, the other gave sheriff’s deputies at the fairgrounds a description of the teen.

Within minutes he was located. And while he was being searched, police say another 16-year-old, who apparently didn’t know about the device became disruptive and kicked a deputy.  That teen was pepper sprayed and arrested too.

“He just decided to intervene and help this individual out. I guess he thought police were harassing this individual,” he said.

The device was quickly moved to a less populated area and the Porter County bomb squad took it apart.

Another 16-year-old was later arrested at his home and charged with manufacturing the device, possibly, authorities say, with help from websites like YouTube.

The other teen is charged with possession of the device. And a third is charged with battery to a police officer, and resisting arrest. All three teens  are from Laporte County.

The manager of the fair says he’s grateful what could have happened didn’t, thanks to the people who spoke up and the deputies who acted quickly.

“They sure headed off something that could have been a disaster. People could have lost their lives,” Manager of LaPorte County Fair Gene Shurte said.

LaPorte officials say they are planning to take a fresh look at their security plan, including the policy on backpacks.

Nobody has to profile you to see you're an idiot.

How is it that they were profiled?! The police were tipped off and responded to those tips.

Glad they got the bomb before anyone was hurt or killed. Would be interesting to see a picture of it unless the police took it apart. Scary to have home-grown terrorists so young in small town USA.
