Woman killed after suspect fleeing police crashes car

A shooting and police chase ends with a fatal 4-vehicle accident on Chicago’s West Side Saturday night. Marisol Mercado, 35, was killed in the crash.

It started with a shooting at 11:30 p.m. Saturday in the 100 block of South Springfield. A 38-year old man was shot in the leg and the gunman fled the scene. Officers in the area heard the shots and a witness pointed out the gunman’s car. When he refused to stop, officers pursued because of the violent nature of the crime, police said.

The chase ended more than a mile away at Chicago and Pulaski with the deadly crash.

“The car came out of nowhere,” said Mercado’s daughter, Venice Gonzalez, 15. Gonzalez was treated and released from the hospital. “I just remember yelling and screaming, ‘Mommy, Mommy, come on, you can do this.’”

Mercado had 5 children from 10-18 years old. She was pronounced dead at Mount Sinai Hospital.

Police say 4 others, including the suspect, suffered non-life threatening injuries. Charges are pending.

The case will be reviewed by the Chicago Police Department’s Traffic Review Board.

I witness this car crash and it was horrible. It really felt like the car that caused the accident was going 100 mph. It was horrible to see it all. I'll pray for every one.

I was classmates with her daughter at Mitchell Elementary. Ms. Mercado was friends with my mom. I can't believe she's gone. :(
