Weather for Mackinac Race less than ideal
The 105th annual “Race to Mackinac” sets forth from Chicago’s Monroe Harbor Saturday.
The weather Saturday is forecast to be warm and calm; a beautiful day for spectators, but sailors say they need much more wind, and wouldn’t even mind a little rain.
Some boats in the “cruising division” started Friday, but the bulk of the fleet, roughly 300 boats, was scheduled to get going around 11 a.m. Saturday.
They’ll race the 333 miles to Mackinac Island, Michigan.
Most sailors finish in 40 to 60 hours.
The record time is 23 hours, 30 minutes.
