Boy, 6, rescued from Indiana Dunes

A 6-year-old boy is at a Chicago hospital after spending more than three hours trapped in an apparent sinkhole at the Indiana Dunes.

It happened at Mount Baldy, which is part of the Dunes, yesterday afternoon.

The boy fell into a hole in an area that had been blocked off for restoration.

His family says, when they tried to pull him out, the hole filled with about 11 feet of sand, covering him.

Contractors with excavating equipment eventually reached the child after three and a half hours.

The boy had vital signs when paramedics took him to the hospital, but beyond that, there is no word on his condition.

The Michigan City News Dispatch reports the boy and his family are likely from Illinois.

I'm glad he is safe, but why did his parents allow him to go to a part that was BLOCKED OFF?
