A 12-year-old boy is being hailed a neighborhood hero for helping neighbors escape an extra-alarm fire on the the South Side.
The fire erupted after 10 AM Saturday morning on the 4400 block of South Union in Chicago’s Canaryville neighborhood. Firefighters said the blaze spread quickly because the homes were so close together.
When 12-year-old Edwin Perez realized what was happening to his home and immediately sprung into action. He alerted his family then ran door-to-door, helping neighbors out of their homes to escape the fire.
Four homes were burned by the blaze, and Chicago Fire Department officials said Perez’s quick work and bravery saved many lives.
Fire Commissioner Joe Santiago personally thanked Perez and then presented him with medal.
