A 29-year-old man crept into the bedroom of a 10-year-old boy in unincorporated Lombard over the weekend and beat him with a fireplace shovel.

The incident took place around 1 am Saturday in the 15100 block of 131st Street, according to Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart.

The boy’s father came running when he heard his son screaming and found Nathan Hiatt of Lockport striking his son, according to Dart.  Hiatt fled, but was quickly found by police under a tree in the home’s backyard.

Hiatt is not unknown to the family, according to Dart, he allegedly attended a “get together” earlier in the day at that home.

Both father and son were treated and released from an area hospital after receiving only minor injuries.

Nathan Hiatt faces two counts of felony aggravated battery.  His bond was set at $250,000.
