Chicago police will not confirm if the shooting deaths of two teenagers in the North Austin neighborhood are connected.
Damani Henard, 14, of Oak Park was shot and killed as he rode his bicycle home from a friend’s house overnight.
Three men approached him in the 5000 block of West North Avenue. He tried to get away, but ended up getting shot in the neck and chest.
His mother, Yolanda Paige, says police detectives told her that her son was targeted in retaliation for a shooting earlier in the evening in which a 19-year-old woman was killed. She insists it is a case of mistaken identity.
“There is no way he was an intended target,” Paige told WGN. “He had no gang involvement.”
Paige says she moved her family from Chicago to Oak Park a year ago to escape the violence. Her son had just graduated from the eighth grade and was looking forward to going to high school.
Police have not released the name of the 19-year-old woman who was killed last night in the 4800 block of West Potomac, about a mile away from where Damani Henard was shot. A crowd was gathered there when two men walked up and started shooting. The victim was hit by a bullet to the head.
No suspects are in custody in either shooting.
