On the most American of holidays, newly minted Americans celebrate the moment at the Chicago Cultural Center. A moving naturalization ceremony featured citizen candidates, their families and friends, and the mayor of Chicago.
“Congratulations. Cherish this moment,” Mayor Rahm Emanual told the crowd. “This is very special. ”
Among those being naturalized today is Dr. Parsa Choudhury of Chicago, who came to the US as a scholar. She applied for citizenship back in 1989.
“I didn’t come with the idea of becoming a citizen. But I just wanted to keep my family together,” she says. “That’s how it happened.”
