He will not visit the former 94-year-old South African president, who’s in the hospital for a lung infection.
In a brief statement, the White House said Obama and his wife would offer their thoughts and prayers at the family’s difficult time. “Out of deference to Nelson Mandela’s peace and comfort and the family’s wishes, they will not be visiting the hospital,” the statement said.
President Obama recently told reporters he doesn’t want to be obtrusive and plans to express to Mandela’s family gratitude for Mandela’s leadership.
President Obama is currently in South Africa as part of a three nation tour.
