Whitney Young considers charging $500 for extra class

Whitney Young Magnet High School is considering a new optional fee for students who want to take an extra class.

Officials say next year’s budget is $1 million less than this school year.

The administration got it down to about $800,000 by eliminating a security position, art teacher and substitute teachers.

Now they’re looking at other ways to close the gap.

One idea is to charge students $500 for taking a seventh class, which is one more than usual.

The Chicago Teachers Union opposes the idea saying, public education isn’t something parents should have to pay for.

How about charging tuition to the students at all Chicago Public Schools that don't leave in the City of Chicago, especially those at the coveted selective enrollment schools. Taking seats away from well deserving kids that actually live in the City of Chicago.

Assuming the "well deserving" kids that live in the city actually have the grades to pass enrollment and not relying on race-quota applications
