Plastic grocery bags may be prohibited in Chicago.
Some Chicago aldermen held a hearing on Tuesday on a potential ban.
Students with signs urged council members to develop an ordinance to prohibit them.
Opponents of the bags say they are bad for the environment because they don’t dissolve or breakdown.
Ald. Joe Moreno, of the 1st ward, plans to introduce a bill designed to protect the environment from plastic bags that collect in landfills.
“They stay in our environment. They stay in our lakes. They stay in our trees. They stay in our sewers,” said Moreno.
But, the Illinois Retail Merchants Association says a ban will increase costs for businesses.
It argues if a consumer has to choose between a free paper bag or buy a reusable bag, then the purchaser will take a free paper bag, which is three times more expensive than plastic ones.

That's right. Drive business out of the city to the suburbs. Biodegradable plastic type bags are available and could be mandated. Reusable canvas bags can present health risks if not very carefully kept clean.
