Police officers shot and killed a 15-year-old boy late Sunday night on the city’s South Side.
It happened just before 11 p.m. in the 6600 block of South Sangamon Street in Englewood.
Officers say they heard gunshots in the area and then saw three men running down a street. When they tried to stop the teen, he took off down an alley and reportedly turned and pointed a gun at the officers.
Relatives identify the teen as Michael Westley.
They say he was playing with fireworks and was not shooting a gun.
They say he spent the afternoon at a Father’s Day celebration at his grandmother’s home.
Police say he had two weapons on him; a 40 caliber handgun and a revolver tucked into his waistband.
The incident is under investigation by the independent police review authority.
