Hit-and-run victim sorely missed in tight-knit South Side community
Residents who frequented the Bridgeport Coffee Company on Chicago’s South Side remember Carissa Hinz, 21, as a charming barista and aspiring artist and were shocked to see her life cut short.
“People here are like family, and we feel that we’ve lost one of our own,” Stephanie Irving, an employee of Bridgeport Coffee Company and friend of Hinz, said.
Walking near the intersection of W. 31st and S. Morgan on Friday night, a driver struck and killed Hinz before driving off, just down the street from where she worked. Police are investigating the fatal hit and run and searching for the driver of the vehicle.
“It’s just horrible that you see someone who works every day who serves you coffee and then the next day they’re gone,” coffee shop customer Diego Tellez said.
The accident is upsetting for a community that is so tight-knit and residents are calling on anyone with any information to call the police.
“People are understandable heartbroken and you know, they’d like to find out,” Irving said. “Someone needs to step forward and be held accountable.”
