Body of missing swimmer recovered in Calumet River

The body of a Far South Side man who went missing while swimming Tuesday afternoon in the Calumet River has been found Tuesday night, authorities said.

The victim is a man in his 30s who was pronounced dead on the scene about 8 p.m. Tuesday, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. The office was not releasing the man’s identity because his family had not been notified yet.

He was pulled from the water near 134th Street, according to the Chicago Fire Department.

The incident began at 2 p.m. at 137th Street and Hoxie Avenue in the Hegewisch neighborhood, said Chicago Police Department Marine Unit Officer Leti Kaner.

“He was swimming with someone and then went missing,” Kaner said of the missing man.

“It’s a recovery operation,” said Kaner about 4:15 p.m. as they were still searching for the victim.

Chicago police divers handled the incident, but Chicago Fire Department personnel stood by, said spokesman Will Knight.

According to Fire Media information, only one person was pulled from the water, correcting earlier reports in the department’s Twitter feed that they were also searching for the other person.

Police said the victim lived in that area.
