Emanuel: School taxes may have to rise

Mayor Rahm Emanuel says Chicago property taxes may be raised to help the Chicago Public Schools close a $1 billion budget deficit. schoolbus

The mayor says, for now, the school system is focused on making cuts in its central office.

CPS is allowed to raise property taxes by no more than 5 percent a year; the mayor says, if spending cuts and state aid can’t balance the budget, he might push for an increase in the 5 percent cap.
